Architecture by Children...With a little help from Hixson. Hixson partnered once again with St. Francis deSales School in Walnut Hills to participate in the 2010 “Architecture by Children” program, sponsored by the Cincinnati chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Architectural Foundation of Cincinnati. Architecture by Children provides an opportunity for students in grades K-12 to participate in a closer examination of architecture by constructing a response to a specific design problem. Local architects and designers give the students an overview of architecture and related fields, discussing with them how buildings are created and the impact of sustainable design. While 2010 marked the fourth year in a row that Hixson has been involved in the project, it was only the second year for St. Francis deSales. The theme of this year’s event was “adaptive reuse.” For two months, St. Francis deSales seventh graders, guided by Hixson volunteer Matthew Spangler, worked in teams to develop design solutions. Ultimately, each group presented their project to an assembly of teachers and students from St. Francis deSales, as well as parents and administrators. A panel of judges from Hixson evaluated the projects and selected three for display at the citywide Architecture by Children celebration show held at the Cincinnati Museum Center March 1-6! |
