Department Store
Glendale, CA

November 2014 Gold winner recipient of the United States Design & Development Awards sponsored by ICSC.

Macy's, Inc. engaged Hixson to be the architects and engineers to design the new Bloomingdale's department store anchoring a comprehensive redevelopment of the Glendale Galleria, Glendale, California by General Growth Properties. This new Bloomingdale's replaces the old abandoned Mervyn's store and a major portion of former mall space.

The 115,000 SF store includes 48 designer shops. The overall design concept of the store is a unique modern approach utilizing luxe materials throughout with dramatic aesthetics and many decorative elements used for the first time. The exterior design features polished black granite at the pedestrian level transitioning to multiple tiles reinforcing the Bloomingdale's classic black and white interior decor. Many of the tiles are illuminated LED light boxes creating a very dramatic dusk and evening effect.

On the interior of the store, variations in the design and layout of the black and white tile flooring that is iconic to Bloomingdale's is carried throughout, while a variety of metals, woods, custom lighting and unique suspended accent systems create branded shops that reflect each designers own unique style and fashion.
