Girl Scouts Visit Hixson to “Think Like an Engineer”

Hixson recently welcomed Girl Scout Junior Troop 45334 to our workplace.  This group of seven fourth graders and their leaders wanted to learn more about energy as they work toward earning their first Leadership Journey awards.  The journey, called “It’s Your Planet – Love It,” leads the girls to explore their own energy as leaders and the energy of Planet Earth, and ultimately leads to earning three awards: Energize, Investigate, and Innovate.  However since much of the journey has a special focus on the energy of places and spaces in our community, the troop is also pursuing a Junior Badge called, “Think Like an Engineer,” through which they are tasked with discovering how engineers use design to solve problems.

Visiting with Hixson is helping the troop fulfill the requirements for this badge, which include researching ways to make the buildings and spaces we use more efficient and “Green.”

While at Hixson, the troop took a tour of our facility before meeting with three of our fantastic female engineers, Emily Wilkins, Meghan Morand, and Tatyana Slobodnik, as well as Interior Designer (and LEED AP ID&C certified) Roselia Harris, to get a behind-the-scenes look at how spaces are created and to meet and interview the people behind that process.  Next up? The girls will complete their own energy audit of a building in the community and design a service project that further advocates smart use of energy.  We think they are going to do great things!

Hixson hosted GS Troop 45334 as part of our commitment to serving the communities in which we live and work and is an active supporter of initiatives that support our area’s youth.  Visit here to learn more about Hixson and our community service initiatives.
