Another Successful Junior Achievement Program Concludes
As part of Hixson’s core values, we strive to serve the communities in which we live and work. In keeping with this commitment, six Hixson associates volunteered their time and talents during this school year to teach Junior Achievement (JA) classes at our partner school St. Francis De Sales.
Following JA’s mission to inspire and prepare young people to succeed, Hixson volunteers led classes on a number of financial and economic-based topics, each of which was tailored for the students in grades three through eight.
Hixson Senior Project Manager Jim Schreyer, P.E., LEED AP, was one of the Hixson associates who volunteered on the JA Program. Jim, who taught Global Marketplace to St. Francis sixth graders, said he was impressed that the students were very knowledgeable about Amazon and its effect on the national economy. In addition, Jim said that he believed “the students genuinely appreciated the opportunity to hear another perspective on the economy, finances, etc.”
Jeff Dotson, Hixson’s Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, who taught the career-oriented topic of “It’s My Future” to the seventh-grade class, agreed. “You can’t predict how the kids will react to a course like JA or the specific topic,” said Jeff, but they were instantly engaged. Plus, the number of different careers or ‘things they wanted to be when they grow up’ was fun to hear. Thinking back to being that age I am not sure I could have named more than a couple jobs I wanted to do (or thought I wanted to do). However, the kids had numerous interest that spread across various careers.”
