Annual Architecture Walk and Construction Contest

Last week, Hixson associates participated in the Architecture Walk and Construction Contest with fifth-grade students at our Partner in Education school, St. Francis de Sales.

In the first session of the two-part program, which provides exposure to the fields of architecture and design through experiential learning, students were led by Hixson volunteers and their teaching staff on an architectural-focused walk around their school’s historic neighborhood. During their tour, students completed a scavenger hunt looking for specific architectural details and features.

Back at school, students competed as teams in a construction contest. Using provided materials, and working with a Hixson coach to help guide them, students were instructed on how to build a model of a building they saw on their walk. Completed structures were then judged by a panel of school faculty members. Prizes were given out for Best Design of each Building Type, Best Individual Design (among all the buildings) and Best Overall Team Design (the entire model). Another prize was given to the team which found the most scavenger hunt clues.

The Architecture Walk and Construction Contest is just one way Hixson gives back to the communities in which we work and live. Visit here to learn more!
